Background

  • VZG public service center for libraries and cultural heritage institutions
  • BARTOC catalogue of semantic artefacts, run by VZG
  • NFDI buildung research data infrastructure in Germany
  • TS4NFDI terminology services for NFDI
  • terminology thesaurus, ontology, classification or similar semantic artefacts

BARTOC History

  • 2012 funded by Andreas Ledl in Basel as “Thesaurusportal”
  • 2013 extended to BARTOC, indexing with DDC and EuroVoc
  • 2018/19 BARTOC Skosmos & BARTOC Fast (both on hold)
  • 2020 Migration to VZG
  • 2025-2028 Funding by DFG

BARTOC Now

  • Information about more then 3800 terminologies
  • Information about subjects, identifiers, publishers, APIs…
  • More then 130 other terminology registries
  • Review of terminology software

BARTOC Development

  • New search engine (2025)
  • Support more terminology APIs and formats (2025/26)
  • Custom collections of terminologies
  • Autoimport/sync & meta search (2026)
  • Quality reports & hosting (2026/27)

BARTOC Architecture

  • Unification via JSKOS data format:
    SKOS in JSON-LD with extensions
  • Everything available as Open Data via APIs
  • Used as backend in several services at VZG and NFDI (e.g. Cocoda mapping application)

Access to terminologies

  • BARTOC knows about terminologies
  • BARTOC knows about terminology APIs
    (Skosmos, OntoPortal, SPARQL, JSKOS API…)
  • BARTOC knows how to access terminology data
  • Please reuse our knowledge!

Some obstacles

  • Status and maturity of terminologies
  • Versioning of terminologies: planned!
  • Communities prefer to do their own:
    integration with other terminology registries

Ideas & Suggestions

  • Use data from BARTOC
  • Become BARTOC editor and contribute
  • List of EOSC vocabularies as subset of BARTOC and/or synced with BARTOC from EOSC terminology registry
  • BARTOC helps findability and reusability of terminologies – but not their maintainance
